Dementieva Too Strong for Sharapova in Toronto Final

Elena Dementieva might not have had the flash or glamour of opponent Maria Sharapova in today’s Rogers Cup tennis final, but she still came out on top in the all-Russian final.

Dementieva led early and never trailed, capitalizing on a terrible start by her weary opponent and the predictable high number of double faults to post a 6-4, 6-3 triumph in just over two hours at the Rexall Centre.

Sharapova lost the first eight points of the match, including three double faults, and was down 4-1 after only 16 minutes of play. But she soldiered on in her third match in 37 hours, fighting through her error prone game to grind it out and forced Dementieva to serve out the match in the second set.

On the third match point, Sharapova’s ill-advised drop shot attempt fell into the net, and Dementieva dropped to her knees, thrilled to defeat an opponent who shellacked her at the 2008 Australian Open.

Even in defeat, Sharapova could take solace in the fact it was her best tournament performance since missing nine months due to right shoulder surgery. Her season last year ended after the Rogers Cup in Montreal.

“It’s nice to hold a trophy. It feels like it’s been a long while,” said Sharapova while lifting the second place.

“It’s a little one, but still something.”

Dementieva, having beaten both Sharapova and Serena Williams en route to the title here, now looms as a serious contender for the U.S. Open crown next month. She has never won a Grand Slam title.

SPANISH DUO CLAIMS DOUBLES CROWN

Spaniards Nuria Llagostera Vives and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez added one more title to their growing resume, using the super tiebreak to beat Samantha Stosur and Rennae Stubbs 2-6, 7-5, 11-9 in the Rogers Cup doubles final.

Llagostera Vives and Martinez Sanchez battled back after losing a lopsided first set, breaking Stubbs late in the second frame for a 6-5 lead. Once in the super tiebreak, the Spanish duo jumped out to a 4-1 lead, before the Australians rallied for a 9-8 lead.

With the pressure on, Llagostera Vives delivered two clutch serves to lead 10-9, before Stubbs’ backhand sailed wide on championship point.

Llagostera Vives and Martinez Sanchez have now won five titles together, most recently at Palermo in July. This is the pairing’s first Rogers Cup title.

Serena Williams Cruises at Rogers Cup

Serena Williams cruised past one of the Bondarenko sisters to reach the Rogers Cup quarter-finals on Thursday.

Williams defeated Ukraine’s Alona Bondarenko 6-1, 6-4, two days after sister Venus Williams fell to Kateryna Bondarenko.

Williams will face the winner of the match between Zheng Jie of China and Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic. The second-ranked Williams is the highest-seeded player left in the tournament after No. 1 Dinara Safina lost on Wednesday.

Earlier, fourth-seeded Elena Dementieva rallied past Shahar Peer of Israel 6-1, 1-6, 6-4. Dementieva will face Samantha Stosur of Australia, who swept Virginie Razzano of France 6-3, 6-1.

Aravane Rezai of France couldn’t repeat after her upset of Safina, falling 6-3, 6-4 to Alisa Kleybanova of Russia.

Bhupathi-Knowles Lift Rogers Cup Doubles Title

Mahesh Bhupathi and his Bahamian partner Mark Knowles continued their rampaging form to lift their fourth ATP title together, beating seventh seeds Max Mirnyi and Andy Ram in straight sets in the finals of $3 million Rogers Cup.

The third seeds won 6-4, 6-3 to clinch their first title at an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tennis tournament on Sunday.

Bhupathi and Knowles played a solid service game and didn’t face a single break point in the match that lasted one hour 12 minutes.

The Indo-Bahamian duo had earned a place in the final by ousting defending champions Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic in the semi-finals.

Bhupathi, the Open Era doubles title leader at the Rogers Cup, collected his fifth Canadian title with a fourth different partner.

The 35-year-old had earlier lifted the doubles trophy in 1997 (with Leander Paes), 2003 (with Mirnyi), 2004 (with Paes) and 2007 (Pavel Vizner).

“I was joking with my coach that now I should probably buy a flat here since it is my fifth title in Canada!” Bhupathi said after the win.

The 37-year-old Knowles returned to the winner’s circle in Canada for the first time since capturing his maiden ATP World Tour title on his tournament debut 16 years ago (with Jim Courier). He had finished runner-up in 1996 and 2002 with long-time partner Nestor.

“This is a very special tournament for me because this is where I won my first ATP title with Jim Courier…in 1993, just a couple of years ago,” said Knowles.

“Mahesh has had so much success here in the past and has carried me to the title,” he added.

Bhupathi and Knowles, who became a regular pair last season, improved to a 4-6 record in tour-level finals with their team’s first title since last October in Basel.

They were finalists at the Australian Open and at the Barcelona Open Banco Sabadell earlier this year.

Bhupathi has now won at least one ATP World Tour title every year since 1997, with a total of 45 titles to his name.
