Medina Garrigues shockingly ousted

tennis

Third seed Anabel Medina Garrigues was a shock casualty at the BGL Luxembourg Open.

She was sent crashing out by qualifier Kirsten Flipkens.

Medina Garrigues, of Spain, is ranked almost 60 places above her opponent but that mattered little as the Belgian ran out a 7-5 6-3 winner to move into the third round.

Sixth seed Sabine Lisicki also safely progressed with a 7-6 (7/1) 6-4 win over wild card Polona Hercog of Slovenia while Timea Bacsinszky defeated Roberta Vinci 6-2 6-2.

In the first round, fourth seed Daniela Hantuchova thrashed German Tatjane Malek 6-1 6-0 in 52 minutes.

It was by no means a perfect performance by the Slovakian who served four double faults but she had great success on her first serve.

Fifth seed Yanina Wickmayer also made it through but was pushed harder by Alexandra Dulgheru with the Belgian winning 6-3 7-6 (7/4).

Also through was Lucie Hradecka who beat qualifier Catalina Castano 7-6 (7/4) 6-2.(source)

TENNIS BELL PETROVA 20090915Russian Nadia Petrova, stung by US teenager Melanie Oudin in the fourth round of the US Open, continued her rebound Wednesday by reaching the quarter-finals of the WTA Bell Challenge.

Petrova, the top seed and defending champion in the 220,000-dollar tournament, beat Madison Brengle 6-3, 6-2 in 69 minutes, belting 10 aces past the 19-year-old American in their second-round clash.

It was the second quick win in as many days for Petrova, who steamrolled American Carly Gullickson 6-2, 6-0 in the first round on Tuesday.

In the quarter-finals Petrova will face fifth-seeded Hungarian Melinda Czink, a 6-4, 6-3 winner over France’s Severine Bremond Beltrame.

Russia’s Alla Kudryavtseva upset sixth-seeded American Jill Craybas 7-5, 6-2 and awaits the winner of Thursday’s match between third-seeded home hope Aleksandra Wozniak and Russia Regina Kulikova.

Eighth-seeded German Julia Goerges punched her quarter-final ticket at the expense of another Canadian, downing wild card Rebecca Marino 6-2, 6-3.

Thursday’s second-round matches will also include last year’s runner-up, Bethanie Mattek-Sands, taking on fellow American Vania King.
