Medina Garrigues shockingly ousted

tennis

Third seed Anabel Medina Garrigues was a shock casualty at the BGL Luxembourg Open.

She was sent crashing out by qualifier Kirsten Flipkens.

Medina Garrigues, of Spain, is ranked almost 60 places above her opponent but that mattered little as the Belgian ran out a 7-5 6-3 winner to move into the third round.

Sixth seed Sabine Lisicki also safely progressed with a 7-6 (7/1) 6-4 win over wild card Polona Hercog of Slovenia while Timea Bacsinszky defeated Roberta Vinci 6-2 6-2.

In the first round, fourth seed Daniela Hantuchova thrashed German Tatjane Malek 6-1 6-0 in 52 minutes.

It was by no means a perfect performance by the Slovakian who served four double faults but she had great success on her first serve.

Fifth seed Yanina Wickmayer also made it through but was pushed harder by Alexandra Dulgheru with the Belgian winning 6-3 7-6 (7/4).

Also through was Lucie Hradecka who beat qualifier Catalina Castano 7-6 (7/4) 6-2.(source)

Somdev’s Feat Makes Akhtar Ali Proud

somdev-chennai-final-313 Having coached India’s Davis Cup sensation Somdev Devvarman during his formative years, Akhtar Ali said the Tripura boy’s hard work has paid dividends and he has a long way to go.

“It’s a proud moment for me that a boy whom I coached for about three years before he moved to Chennai and US has helped India qualify for the World Group,” Ali said about Somdev’s historic win last night in Johannesburg.

After picking up the racquet, nine-year-old Somdev was taught the basics of the game by Ali at Calcutta South Club when his father, then an income tax employee, was posted here.

“He was very hardworking and disciplined. Having come from a small town, he had the right attitude unlike the boys who come from cities. His sincerity has taken him where he is now,” Ali told PTI.

SomdevDoubles heavyweight Mahesh Bhupathi, who flew into Johannesburg on Thursday, just ahead of the draw ceremony, said India will miss the
