Medina Garrigues shockingly ousted

tennis

Third seed Anabel Medina Garrigues was a shock casualty at the BGL Luxembourg Open.

She was sent crashing out by qualifier Kirsten Flipkens.

Medina Garrigues, of Spain, is ranked almost 60 places above her opponent but that mattered little as the Belgian ran out a 7-5 6-3 winner to move into the third round.

Sixth seed Sabine Lisicki also safely progressed with a 7-6 (7/1) 6-4 win over wild card Polona Hercog of Slovenia while Timea Bacsinszky defeated Roberta Vinci 6-2 6-2.

In the first round, fourth seed Daniela Hantuchova thrashed German Tatjane Malek 6-1 6-0 in 52 minutes.

It was by no means a perfect performance by the Slovakian who served four double faults but she had great success on her first serve.

Fifth seed Yanina Wickmayer also made it through but was pushed harder by Alexandra Dulgheru with the Belgian winning 6-3 7-6 (7/4).

Also through was Lucie Hradecka who beat qualifier Catalina Castano 7-6 (7/4) 6-2.(source)

Henin confirms Brisbane comeback

tennis

Former world number one Justine Henin will make her return to tennis at the Brisbane International in January.

The seven-time grand slam champion confirmed today that Brisbane will be her first competitive tournament since retiring in May last year.

The 27-year-old Belgian sees the competition as perfect preparation for the Australian Open, where she has already been granted a wild card.

“After a 15-month absence I am pleased to begin my second tennis career at the Brisbane International,” Henin said.

“I am looking forward to returning to Queensland and seeing the new facilities at the tennis centre as well as the surrounding attractions on offer in Brisbane.

“It will be great to get back to playing competitive tennis again and with the strong field, the same court surface and a similar climate to Melbourne, it will be the perfect preparation leading into the Australian Open.”

Tournament director Steve Ayles was delighted to have Henin at the event, as she joins the likes of US Open champion and compatriot Kim Clijsters, Serbian Ana Ivanovic and local hope Jelena Dokic in an extremely strong field.

“It is shaping up to be a blockbuster event,” Ayles said.

“With the appearance of Justine, the tennis world spotlight will be on Brisbane come January and the tournament will be taken to a whole new level.

“It will be tremendous to see Justine match up against her former rival and countrywoman Kim Clijsters.

“With the former French Open champion Ana Ivanovic and Australian Open quarter-finalist Jelena Dokic confirmed, we are looking at an extremely strong women’s field.”

Henin will play exhibition tournaments in Charleroi and Dubai later this year to gain match-play practice before her tournament return.(source)

Clijsters cruises past Shaughnessy

tennis

Kim Clijsters made a bright start to her BGL Luxembourg Open campaign as she returned to action for the first time since triumphing at Flushing Meadows.

The 26-year-old Belgian, now ranked 18th in the world after achieving swift success in her comeback and seeded second this week, cruised through her first-round match against Meghann Shaughnessy.

American Shaughnessy was outclassed by the former world number one who has taken a month off since winning in New York, as Clijsters won 6-2 6-2.

Clijsters will face Slovenian Katarina Srebotnik next after the 28-year-old defeated Germany’s Anna Lena Groenefeld 7-5 6-3.

Clijsters’ doubles partner and fellow Belgian Kirsten Flipkens also advanced in the singles, the qualifier beating Poland’s Urszula Radwanska 6-4 6-3.

Ukrainian seventh seed Kateryna Bondarenko suffered a 6-0 6-2 defeat to Italian Roberta Vinci.

Switzerland’s Patty Schnyder defeated Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic 6-4 6-1 and Israel’s Shahar Peer overcame another Czech, Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, 6-1 6-3.

Slovenia’s Polona Hercog beat Italy’s Maria Elena Camerin 3-6 7-5 7-5 and Switzerland’s Timea Bacsinszky beat Julie Coin of France 6-4 6-3.

France’s Alize Cornet defeated compatriot Aravane Rezai, a lucky loser, 6-0 6-2.(source)
