The first, with Viking helmets and blue-yellow flags in support of Sweden’s top seed Robin Soderling had rehearsed their synchronised chants to perfection, but their yells wound down to a whimper as their man crashed out in the opening round.

The second band, wearing t-shirts that spelled out S-O-M-D-E-V, gathered their strength as Somdev Devvarman, growing in confidence with every fist-pump, rallied from 5-2 down against his favoured opponent Rainer Schuettler to win 7-5 6-2. (more…)

tennisThe draw ceremony for the singles matches at the Aircel Chennai Open 2010 has produced several interesting 1st round contests. The eighth ranked player in the world and No. 1 seeded player in this tournament – Robin Soderling from Sweden is competing against Robby Ginepri from USA while No. 2 seeded player – Marin Cilic is up against Russian player Igor Kunitsyn.

The two Indian wild cards entrants Rohan Bopanna and Somdev Devvarman will be facing tough and seasonsed opponents in the opening round. Somdev Devvarman is going up against German Rainer Schuettler while Rohan Bopanna is up against Swiss player and 2008 Olympic Gold medal winner in men’s doubles, Stanislas Wawrinka. Rainer Scheuttler, a former finalist at the Australian Open, is a regular visitor to Chennai and he will look to exact revenge against Somdev from last year’s event, when Shchuettler had to withdraw due to injury.

The other prominent wild card entry is the former Chennai Open winner and former world number one – Carlos Moya, who is playing fourth seeded Serbian player Tipsarevic Janko. (more…)
