Nadal crashes out after defeat

tennisRafael Nadal became the first man to be eliminated from the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals after a 6-1 7-6 (7/4) defeat by Nikolay Davydenko.

The world number two, who lost 6-4 6-4 to Robin Soderling in his first round-robin match, was simply blown away by the Russian in the opening set and a second-set recovery ended with defeat in a superb tie-break.

The scoreline means the Spaniard can no longer qualify for the semi-finals, with Davydenko and Novak Djokovic vying for the second spot alongside Soderling, who sealed his passage today with victory over Djokovic. (more…)

Nadal fights for survival against Davydenko

Rafael Nadal needs a win on Wednesday to keep his Final hopes alive. The Spaniard will take on tough Russian Nikolay Davydenko.

The last few months of the season have never been great for Rafael Nadal. The current world No. 2 struggles with the often low bouncing courts during the indoor season, and London has been no exception. Nadal played fairly well in his first match against Robin Soderling, but he played nervous tennis in both sets at 4-5 and lost in straights.

Nikolay Davydenko is a good indoor player, though he looked as though he was dragging a bit against Novak Djokovic on Monday night. The Russian has proven that he is more than capable of beating Nadal on hard courts; he did so in easy straight sets last month at the Shanghai Masters.

Nadal will no doubt try his hardest, but Davydenko will probably get the win in 3.(source)

One and Only

Roger Federer again bounced back after losing the first set, rallying to beat Andy Murray 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 Tuesday at the ATP World Tour Finals and ensuring he will have the year-end No. 1 ranking for the fifth time.

Federer dominated Murray in the final two sets, finally controlling play from his serve and also getting his forehand on target. Murray, meanwhile, started to struggle to win any points.

But for Federer, finishing the year as the top-ranked player was better than beating Murray.

“Obviously, that was one of my big goals for this season. And it’s one of the greatest performances I think I’ve achieved,” said Federer, who reached all four Grand Slam finals, got married and had twin girls. “Playing so well at the most important moments, it’s been the key this year. I’m not fit to be number one

Rafael Nadal admitted he does not currently deserve to be number one in the world.

This was after losing to Robin Soderling in his first group match at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London on Monday.

The Spaniard went into the end-of-season event knowing he had an outside chance of overhauling Roger Federer for the year-end top spot but that surely went with his 6-4 6-4 defeat at the O2 Arena.

“I think the chances I have are not here, not to be number one,” he said.

“I think it is not the right moment. My level right now I think is not to be number one. (more…)
