World No.3, Maria Sharapova will be leading the Russian Fed Cup team when they face Spain in the next month Fed Cup encounter.
Former Russian world No.1, Maria Sharapova will be making her third appearance in the Fed Cup for Russia and has won both of singles rubbers in 2008 against Israel and was beaten in the opening singles against France last year.
Russia captain, Shamil Tarpischev also selected two-time Grand Slam winner Svetlana Kuznetsova, No. 31 Nadia Petrova and Australian Open quarterfinalist Ekaterina Makarova.
Russia has won the Fed Cup title four times since 2004. Russia has got a head to head record of 5-1 against Spain, which won the title five times between 1991 and 1998.
Russia will be clashing with Spain in Fed Cup competitions from Feb. 4-5 best-of-five series on the indoor hard court at the Olympic Arena in Moscow.
Meanwhile, world No.3, Maria Sharapova has faced one of worst defeats in her career in the 2012 Australian Open finals against Victoria Azarenka with a score line of 6-3 6-0. This was Sharapova second consecutive grand slam final defeat. Earlier, she was knocked out the finals of the 2011 Wimbledon grand slam finals.
