Former Russian world No.1, Maria Sharapova has faced back to back grand slam finals defeats in a span of six-months. However, Sharapova this year is bidding to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics.
World No.3, Maria Sharapova is the winner of three grand slams title at Australian Open, US Open and Wimbledon and has earned nearly $US18 million in prize money and doubles that in endorsement. But, the Russian has never participated in the Olympics, which will be a dream tournament of every player’s career.
Earlier, Sharapova, who has clinched her first Wimbledon title in her career at 17, but was not, selected for the Athens 2004 Olympics because, Under the ITF rules for Olympic tennis, only the top four in singles (ranked in the world top 60) for each country are eligible. So, as Sharapova was ranked low, it has been disqualified.
In 2008 at Beijing Olympics, Sharapova had the ranking but her right shoulder was under duress and she had an operation after falling in the second round at Wimbledon.
Russian, Sharapova while speaking with the sources on Sunday has said that, personally it’s something I’ve been looking forward towards for a long time, and that’s a big goal of mine. To have a long grass season will be really fun.
