Another solid display by John Isner came to an end, as the American world No.17, John Isner was defeated against Spanish world number 19, Feliciano Lopez in the stunning five set encounter with a score line of 6-3, 6-7, 6-4, 6-7(0), 6-1.
Spaniard No.17, Lopez has ended-up a winning a toughest battle in his career against Isner in three hours and 26 minutes to advance into the fourth round of 2012 Australian Open on Friday, January 20, 2012.
Huge crowd at the Hisense Arena in Melbourne Park, Australia, witnessed one of the finest displays of sheer determination and resilience from the two Top-20 players. Both contestants stretched each other to their limits, extending the contest into five enthralling sets. Momentum kept swinging throughout the match and it was extremely hard to predict the winner until the end.
The see-saw battle between Lopez and Isner provided tremendous entertainment to the Aussie crowd and every winner was cheered with joy. Both contestants kept focus throughout the match and exchanged a total of 119 winners in the matchup. Lopez registered six break points in the contest, with Isner striking merely one, something which cost the match to the American 16th seed in the end.
Isner actually served almost double the number of aces delivered by Lopez in the match, sending down 30 of the 46 unanswered efforts. Lopez also gifted his rival 12 points through double-faults, yet from the back of the court he had the extra guile.
Lopez will next face his fellow counter men and top seeded player in tournament, Rafael Nadal in the fourth round of the 2012 Australian Open.
