The World No. 10th Andrea Petkovic has withdrawn from the 2012 Australian Open championship, while former World No. 1 Serena Williams and four-time major title holder Kim Clijsters suffering from injuries, ahead of the year’s opening Grand Slam.
The 24-year-old Andrea Petkovic has played best tennis in 2011 season, where she has reached the quarter finals at Australian Open, French Open and US Open. Petkovic, who has suffered a stress fracture in her back and forced to pull out of the year first Grand Slam. The German star has become the second leading women’s player to withdrawn from the Australian Open, after former World No. 1 Venus Williams of United States.
Petkovic was very disappointed to withdrawn from the Australian Open, as she sustained lower back injury came to light in a MRI scan, after losing to Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland in the second round of the Sydney International on Tuesday. Petkovic said she had a back pain from past three to four months and it’s not possible to take part in the Australian Open, which will begin next week in Melbourne.
The 13-time singles major title holder Serena and his rival Kim Clijsters have begin their 2012 Australian Open preparations on Tuesday, where both the players are considered to be hot favorites to lift the crown. American top seed is aiming to win the sixth Grand Slam in Melbourne, while Clijsters directing for the second championship. The 2008 Australian Open champion Maria Sharapova is likely to return back to action at Melbourne next week and she has recovered from injury sustained at WTA Championship in Istanbul.
