2009 US open champion, Juan Martin Del Potro, who has a great return this season, has confirmed to play in the Apia International in Sydney, ahead of his preparation of the 2011 Australian Open.
Argentina top seed, Del Potro will be in field along with the former top-10 player with Lleyton Hewitt and Marcos Baghdatis in Apia International, which is scheduled to be held from January 8-14, 2012 in the Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre, Sydney, Australia.
World No.11, Potro while speaking with the sources has said that, Sydney is a great city and added that, he likes the tournament very much. The Argentina also appreciated the tournament officials and crowd stating that, In Sydney they gave me one of the first wildcards after my injury and I appreciate this very much from then and the people at the tournament in Sydney were very nice to me and my team.
Former US Open champion, Potro has showed his confidence by stating that, he will do very well in the tournament because the tournament has a great history and tradition and a lot of players from Argentina have played in it and done very well.
Craig Watson, tournament director while speaking about the Argentina player has said that, ‘We are delighted that Juan Martin Del Potro will begin his season at the Apia International Sydney again,’ Watson said.
‘He played one of the matches of the tournament in 2011 against Feliciano Lopez in the first round and I know he won a lot of new fans in Sydney with that gutsy performance.’
‘He is close to getting back to the form that took him to the US Open title in 2009, as well as wins over Federer and Nadal.’
Watson believes that he will be back in the world’s top five before too long and another Grand Slam title could be on the cards in 2012 and added that, he will come to the Apia International Sydney early in the New Year fired up and ready to get his season off to a winning start.
Del Porto had shown an out standing performance this season by improving his ranking from 258 to 11 and winning 2-ATP World Tour title with a win-loss record of 48-18 in 2011.
