Petra Kvitova may have a chance to top her outstanding season by leading the Czech Republic to its first Fed Cup victory in 23 years this weekend over a Russia side struggling with injuries.
Kvitova is cracking her first WTA Championships title that lifted her to world rankings no. 2 position, and is likely to play singles along with Lucie Safarova for the Czech team. Kvitova started the season ranked outside the top 30 but, she won Wimbledon for her first Grand Slam title and hit Victoria Azarenka in the WTA Championships final in Istanbul on Sunday.
Petra Kvitova told that, she knows that she is on No. 1 world rankings, and there will be pressure on her. But still we have a great side and hopefully we will get three points certain. We will do our best this weekend.
Meanwhile, Russia is still trying to conclude who will be its No. 1 singles player, as seventh-ranked Vera Zvonareva has swelling in her right shoulder, which could endanger her participation in the final round. Russia also has Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Maria Kirilenko in the side.
Zvonareva injured from pain in her shoulder and was close to leave before losing on the same court in the quarterfinals of the Kremlin Cup two weeks ago. Last week, In Istanbul the Russian won only one game of her four matches.
Tarpischev expects that a slow hard court at the Olympic indoor stadium will advantage his side and slow down Kvitova’s speedy match. The Czechs may have one more benefit, as both Safarova and Kvitova are left-handers.
