Czech superstar, Petra Kvitova ended a memorable season with a title triumph at the 2011 WTA Championships, a season finale being played here in Istanbul, Turkey. In the final match today, Kvitova beat Belarusian Victoria Azarenka in three sets thriller with a score line of 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.
Kvitova made a dream start to the match and reeled off five games in a row, just to lose focus and with it, the next five games as Azarenka retaliated. Kvitova then raised the level of her play in the 12th game to snatch a break and seal the first set 7-5.
The second set opened with a shift in momentum when Azarenka broke Kvitova’s serve in the second game, and then in the fifth as well, to eventually wrap it up with a 6-4 score line.
The decider once again turned the tide in Kvitova’s favour as she secured a break in the second game and gallantly held all her serves afterwards to complete the 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 win in two hours and 28 minutes of play.
Kvitova collected the winner’s check of a whopping USD 1.75 million along with the magnificent silverware. Kvitova also ensured a career high No.2 ranking
