World number 18, Feliciano Lopez of Spain won the Corona Longest Serve for Charity event at Valencia on Sunday, 30th October. Competing alongside Lopez was compatriot David Ferrer and Indian doubles specialist Rohan Bopanna.
Serving for Charity, the professionals competed to see who served the ball the furthest. The professionals were competing on one of the lakes at the City of Arts and Sciences. Lopez won the competition with a serve of 70m winning the prize money of two thousand Euros.
Playing for charity, Lopez donated his winnings to his compatriot and friend, Juan Carlos Ferrero’s foundation. Acknowledging his friend’s gesture, Ferrero said, “I really want to thank Feliciano for his help with my foundation. We try to help children in need and I am actually not surprised he won because his shoulder is double the size of ours.”
Lopez further added, “It’s nice to take part in different activities and I had never served for distance before. I really had a good time and I am very happy to be able to help Juan Carlos and his foundation with it.”
Ferrer was reported to have said that he was not surprised that Lopez won. He jokingly added that next year he would like to bring the hard hitting Croat giant, Ivo Karlovic and then win against him.
Feliciano Lopez is seeded eighth in Valencia, as defending champion; David Ferrer is top seeded player in this week Valencia Open.
