The top seeded players in the 2011 Bank of the West Classic, Victoria Azarenka and Samantha Stosur have been defeated in the second round encounter at Stanford.
The top seeded players following the bye in the first round have clashed in the second round after their Wimbledon exits.
Victoria Azarenka, the world No.4 was seeded No.1 at Stanford and has faced New Zealand’s qualifier Marina Erakovic on Thursday. However, the top seeded player was stunned against the qualifier in a three set thriller with a score line of 4-6, 7-5 and 6-2.
Belarus world No.4, Azarenka has started off the second encounter as a favourite player and has won the first set with 6-4 against the New Zealand player, Marina Erakovic.
In the second and third set, Marina has bounced back into the game giving a tough competition to the top seeded player and won the match with 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.
While, the fourth seed, Samantha Stosur, who had a disappointing season was thrashed out against the 2011 Wimbledon semifinalist, Sabine Lisicki with a score line of 6-3, 7-5.
Japan’s Ayumi Morita battled past Polish qualifier, Urszula Radwanska to enter into the quarterfinals of the tournament with 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.
All the winner of yesterday will be clashing in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Bank of the West Classic on Friday, July 29, 2011.
