In the second-round of the 2011 Farmers Classic, World No. 25 Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus will take on World No. 76 Yen-hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei. Obviously, former World No. 8 Baghdatis is a favorite in this battle.
So far, it has been a pretty ordinary season for the former World No. 8 Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus, who has 4 ATP titles to his name. The Cypriot has not reached the final of any tournament this year. Last year, he won a title early in the season in Sydney.
Baghdatis has a 16-15 win-loss record this year, which says a lot about his current form. Well, he must be looking to start afresh here at Los Angeles by making a convincing start to 2011 Farmers Classic. Well, Baghdatis will start off his campaign here against World No. 76 Yen-hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei, who is also struggling with a bad form, of late.
Yen-hsun Lu has a poor 9-16 win-loss record this year and he is still chasing his maiden ATP title on tour. Both players like to pose problems for their opponents with their strong baseline play. Baghdatis did well at Wimbledon, as he pushed the eventual champion Djokovic to four sets, but once again ill-timed unforced errors spoiled it completely for him.
Same is the case with Lu, who beat former World No. 1 Andy Roddick last year at Wimbledon, but could not continue, in the same way afterwards. In fact, these are challenging times for both the contenders and they need some comprehensive victorious to boost up their dwindling confidence.
Baghdatis certainly looks in a far better position, but the Cypriot can’t afford to be complacent against Lu, who is also looking hungrier to get some success on tour. This will be a second-meeting between the two. Last time they met in 2009 in Kuala Lumpur, where the Cypriot got the better off Lu in three testing sets.
