Rafael Nadal thrashed out American Mardy Fish in four gruelling sets to advance to the semi-finals of the 2011 Championships at Wimbledon, season’s third Grand Slam event being played here at the All England Lawn Tennis Club in London, England.
Nadal made a fine start to the match and broke Fish’s serve early on to put the pressure on the American who, soon fizzled to give Nadal a one set lead.
The second set did not change the story much and Nadal snatched a break of serve in the fourth game to eventually race to a two sets to love lead.
Nadal opened the third set on an extremely competitive note and failed to repeat the success of the first two sets by missing out of several break point opportunities. As a result, despite his impressive number of winners, Nadal faltered in the 12th game to give Fish a lifeline in the match.
The fourth set, however opened on a usual note for Nadal, who broke Fish in the third game of the set to eventually wrap up the 6-3, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 match in two hours and 53 minutes of play.
Nadal hit a total of 43 winners to Fish’s 33 but also capitalized on the 27 unforced errors committed by the American to seal the deal in four sets.
