The top seeds, Gisela Dulko and Flavia Pennetta were defeated by Sania Mirza and her partner Elena Vesnina by 6-0, 7-5 to take the spot in the women’s doubles semifinals in the French Open on Monday. The seventh seed, Indo-Russian pair has wrapped up the quarter final battle in one hour and six minutes after blanking the Argentine-Italian duo for the first set.
It was an achievement for Sania Mirza, as this is the first time that she has reached the women’s doubles semifinals in the Grand Slam event. The previous best performances for Sania were the quarter-final appearances during 2007 US Open and 2008 Wimbledon.
Along with this, in Men’s doubles, the Indo-Pak pair, Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-ul-haq Qureshi has advanced to the men’s doubles quarter-finals with a 6-3, 7-5, wins over the Kazak-Uzbek pair, Andret Golubev and Denis Istomin. The fifth seed Indo-Pak has defeated their opponents in one hour and nine minutes in the third round. This will be the third quarter-final appearance in the last four Grand Slams for both Bopanna and Qureshi.
Bopanna and Qureshi will face against the top seeded American twins Mike and Bob Bryan. These American twins have defeated the Russia’s Teymuraz Gabashvili and Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan 7-6 (6) 7-5 in their pre-quarterfinal match. Last year, Bopanna and Qureshi had lost to Bryan brothers in the final of US Open. Rohan Bopanna is the only an Indian surviving in the men’s doubles. Besides him, the pair of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi gave shock exit in the second round.
Alongside, a contest of Indian interest would be the mixed doubles quarter-final between the Indo-Czech pair of Leander Paes and Iveta Benesova and the top seeded combination of Serbian Nenad Zimonjic and Slovakian Katarina Srebotnik.
Sania Mirza and Elena Vesnina will meet the winners from the game between Liezel Huber/Lisa Raymond vs Victoria Azarenka/Maria Kirilenko in the semifinals.
