After lot of excitement and drama, Gael Monfils has thrashed David Ferrer in the French Open 2011 with 6-4, 2-6, 7-5, 1-6, 8-6 on Monday. The Spanish seventh seed, David Ferrer has given a tough competition to French contender, Monfils.
In order to close the match out, Monfils needed four match points, but the Spaniard was out-gutted when it mattered most. After flubbing his first two match points due to nervous ground strokes, Monfils fought off a breakpoint in the 13th game of the last set, played a brilliant final game and has taken the match with sliding forehand winner.
Monfils said that it was one of his best matches of his career and every time he has a tough fight there and he plays five-setters. However, the match was suspended due to darkness after three hours on Sunday with Monfils leading with 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 and 0-2. He got twisted his ankle in the final game and was struggling, after the rocky fourth set. He well recovered and played in the fifth.
David Ferrer was attempting to reach his first Roland Garros semi-final. He said that failing to convert the break point at 6-6 in the decided was very crucial in the outcome of the match and continued that it maybe due to a bit if stress and anxiety. He told that he had three forehands which were off the court as well as also he was not perhaps focusing enough. He stated that he had his breakpoint which unfortunately he lost control and wanted to win at that point but failed.
Gael Monfils will face Roger Federer in the quarter-finals on Tuesday. Earlier in 2008, he last to him during semifinals and in 2009, he lost to him in the quarter-finals. However, he had a huge task in front of him; Monfils has a win over him in last autumn in Bercy.
