Rafael Nadal, the Spanish world no.1, finally clinched the Laureus World Sports Awards last night, on Monday, 7th February, 2011, in Abu Dhabi. The tennis celebrity won his first Laureus Sportsman of the Year award during a glittering ceremony at the Emirates Palace hotel.
Nadal, who won his first Laureus Sportsman of the Year’ trophy, has already proved that, he is one of the all-time greats in the world sports, and has done enough to electrify the Laureus judges, who voted him against the likes of Manny Pacquiao (Filipino boxer), Kobe Bryant (American basketball star LA Lakers’), Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta (Barcelona-soccer teammates) for the prestigious award.
The Spaniard, after receiving the Laureus Sportsman of the Year’ trophy said that, “it is the most important award in world sport”, and “My real goal is to continue to be competitive in every game. I did not have the perfect start this season, but it has not been terrible.
Nadal, had a fabulous season, in the year 2010, as he regained the world No.1 ranking on 7 June 2010, and has won the US Open, French open and Wimbledon titles. However, the Spaniard, who was aiming to become the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to hold all four Grand Slam titles in a stretch, was defeated by fellow ATP team-mate, David Ferrer, in the Australian Open, due to Thigh Muscle Tear. And, he is out of action for a short period.
Roger Federer, Tennis rival of Nadal, won Sportsman of the Year for four times in succession between 2005 and 2008. Nadal said that, he was delighted with his latest achievement.
It was the domination of Spanish country at the Laureus awards, as Rafael Nadal was nominated as a Laureus Sportsman of the Year and the Spanish-soccer team winning the World Team of the Year for their victory in World Cup.
