The highlights and scores of the Australian Open 2011 are updated here. Australian Open 2011, the First Grand Slam of the year, tennis community geared up once again for a promising 2011, the kick off has been ended in style.
There were numerous characters surrounding some of the tour’s top players at the end of last year, but they came out swinging, proving that they’re willing to put up a big fight in 2011. From the day one, Australian Open looked comparatively typical at its beginning. Especially, the men’s round looked comparatively typical at its beginning.
All the top seeded players started their matches with little fight back. However, it was a completely a different story for several new faces down under.
The day one of the Australian open, top seeded player Nikolay Davydenko, the Russian player seeded 23, was defeated by the German Florian Mayer by 6-3 4-6 7-6(4) 6-4. The American player, Sam Querrey seeded 18 was defeated by the unseeded France player Lukasz Kubot in a 5-set thriller by 5-7 6-2 3-6 6-1 8-6.
Young Canadian Milos Raonic made a splash when he first took out 22 seed Michael Llodra of France, and again when he took out 10th seed Mikhail Youzhny of Russia in the third round. It took a fiery Ferrer to finally stop him.
At the end of the tournament, it was turn for the top five players to contest between each other for the championship.
However in the quarter finals, Rafael Nadal, world No.1 player, aimed to become the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to hold all four Grand Slams consecutively. Rafael Nadal was thrashed out by his country men, David Ferrer by 6-4 6-2 6-3 in the quarterfinals of the Australian open.
The next player to go out of the tournament in the Quarters was Tomas Berdych, seeded No.6 was defeated by Novak Djokovic (Ranked no.3) by 6-1 7-6 6-1. In the semifinals, the defending champion, Roger Federer losing in straight sets against the Novak Djokovic by 7-6(3) 7-5 6-4. And in the other semifinals match it was Novak Djokovic, seeded no.7 was defeated by Andy Murray in a 5-set thriller by 4-6 7-6(2) 6-1 7-6(2).
On Sunday night, the much more anticipated match between Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray took the court to contest the final match of the 2011 Australian Open.
It was a fabulous performance by Novak Djokovic, the Serbian player and the world No.3, has defeated Andy Murray, the world No.5 ranked player by thrashing him in straight sets by 6-4 6-2 6-3, and clinched the title in the finals of the Australian Open 2011.
